According to scientists, sugar power could be the next big thing for batteries. In the near future we should expect that batteries running on sugar will exist and it’ll last THREE TO FOUR TIMES longer than lithium ion batteries (They power cellphones, PDAs, PSPs, etc.)! The batteries will be biodegradable so once it’s flat you can use it as fertilizer, though I doubt it’ll be rich in nutrients
.
The battery is a clever mix between “biology and chemistry”. All animals and plants live off sugar as their energy. This battery does the same. Adapted enzymes from nature are used to strip the enerfy from sugar into electricity in fuel cells. What makes this fuel cell so much different from the rest is the fact that everything is biodegradable.
So far the batteries have been made from different sugar sources, such as tree sap and fizzy drinks, the most effective being normal sugar dissolved in water thus far.
Expect around 3 to 5 years until it’s ready. Then we’ll see whether it works.
