$330 000 is a lot of money. That’s more pizza than I care to imagine. But the expensive and much loved delicacy was unfortunately not my favorite food, but a truffle. Your ordinary truffle won’t fetch anywhere near that much, despite already being expensive. What much this mushroom so expensive is its massive mass, 1.5 kg!
Think about it: A mushroom that size is pretty rare, right? Now imagine it’s one the most treasured types mushrooms in the world. That explains why I could buy a super-car instead of a fungus.
Things of such value are usually sold through an auction, and that is where this beauty was purchased. The “lucky” owner is Stanley Ho, who was bidding via telephone with his partner who was on stage. The major appeal was also the strange shape of the truffle, “Normally truffles are more round. This looks like the brain of a man … but it’s nice, very nice” says the Italian chef who presented the truffle, Alfonso Iaccarrino.
It does make you wonder however, so much commotion for a fungus? I suppose it’s fair to say, Welcome to Modern Cuisine.
And I hope the chef preparing the truffle doesn’t have shaky hands. I’d hate to destroy a $330 000 delicacy.

Yeah, it’s not the most beautiful fungus, but that didn’t out off its buyer!
