A new study, conducted in Russia (Probably the best place to start), has confirmed that the brain-damaging effects of alcohol affect women more quickly than men.
Alcoholics, both male and female, were taken and tests of neurocognitive function were conducted. The result showed that the women performed worse. The study was conducted by Dr. Barbara Flannery and her colleagues from RTI International. This doesn’t mean men should drink more than women,
“Women are vulnerable to the extent to which they will experience the negative consequences of alcohol abuse and alcoholism more rapidly than men, but men will also experience it — the same kinds of effects,”
she said.
The tests were conducted with :
- 24 alcoholic women
- 78 alcoholic men
- 68 non-alcoholic men and women
The group was between the ages of 18 and 40.
The use of alcohol for the men was longer, around 15 years where women were around 11. As well as their dependence on it, 8 years compared to 5 of a women. Though Woman on the other drank more often than the men (surprise?) 91 percent and 72 percent respectively.
