Prevention is better than cure, as usual, but it’s happened to all of us: You leave a damp towel somewhere and forget about it, only to discover it later with a smell that can make you faint.

Luckily, thanks to the always-useful Wikihow.com , you have 2 easy ways to eliminate that annoying scent. You have 2 choices here, Vinegar (the possibly easier option) or Ammonia (which is more complex). I personally like the vinegar method most, so it’ll be the one I’m focusing on, but click for how to remove the mildew smell from towels to check out the ammonia method too.

Here it is:

  1. Put your towels in the washing machine, using the hottest water available. Add one or two cups of white vinegar. Do not add detergent, fabric softener, or any other products at this time. Run the washer.
  2. Leave the towels in the washer and wash the same load again just as you would normally with laundry soap. Again, use the hottest water available. Don’t use fabric softener or any other products.
  3. Dry the load in the dryer using a high heat setting. Towels should be thoroughly dry when you pull them out. If they’re not dry, put them back in, or move them immediately outside and hang them in the sunlight.

So there you have it! An easy and rather cheap way don’t you think? It doesn’t require that much work, and it’ll save you a couple bucks while you’re at it.

I’ll end off with saying again that prevention is better than cure, take good care of your towels and hang them up in a dry place, and don’t let them “rot” and develop that foul odor.
