Around 200km out from Paris on a 73km circuit, there is a revamped TGV attempting to remake speed history. The previous record, 515.3kph, was set in 1990 by an “ancestor” of the current train, an older TGV model. This the record of the fastest train on rails.

Officials say that the train has already reached 559 km/h on its test runs. Depending on the train after the initial record, the French train will possibly attempt the world train speed record, a enormous and daunting 581km/h!

The record attempt is set to take place at 11:00GMT.

I’ll update once the attempt it over.

UPDATE: The train has accomplished the record :

A specially prepared version of France’s high-speed TGV train on Tuesday officially broke the world’s rail-speed record, reaching a speed of 574.8 kilometres per hour (kph).
