Around the world in 80 days? Try 18 years, and still going! That’s an amazing feat by this 80-year-old man, who has just become an inspiration for myself.

He’s called “The Hawk“, or Harry Lee McGinnis, and he’s been walking around our globe accompanied by a light backpack and a metal-tipped walking stick. If anything it’s a inspiration for people “going green” worldwide, as he refuses unnecessary transport whenever offered.

He’s seen more of our planet than most of us will ever see, he’s been to:

  • 66 countries
  • All 50 states of the USA
  • Africa
  • Asia
  • South America

If his feet had an odometer he would’ve traveled around 80,000 miles (around 130,000km)! And he’s 80 years old. That’s amazing.

So when is he going to be finished? He expects to be done in 2-4 years time, around the same time he wishes to publish a book of his legendary journey.

And he’s not done yet. He wants to play tennis at 100.

To follow his journey, check out Walk of the Hawk

People who read the blog frequently know that I am a firm favorite of Lolcats. But this one appealed to me recently, and I really thought that I should share it.

Reminds you of the time you really don’t want to hear the person’s petty problem? Definitely.

The Baby Burrito

News report of baby burrito

This is just another one of those news articles which you simply laugh at. What I find particularly funny is that the newspaper / publication prioritized this news above everything else from Mountain View.

Stay Healthy with 29 Office Exercises

It’s a constant struggle for most of us to constantly stay fit, and therefore healthy. The work constantly being shoved onto us, and the many distractions, especially Email, don’t seem to help either. Thankfully there are certain exercises which can be done in the office, some of them being adaptions from full-blown stretches and other fitness activities.

Lifehack.org (which should be in everyone’s bookmarks) has put together a large list of 29 exercises you can do near you office desk. These are all nearly categorized, and so it might not be a bad idea to make a print-out!

Here’s some exercises you can do from the Feet and Legs section:

  1. Toe raises. Lift your toes while keeping your heels firmly on the ground. While you can do this exercise standing, it works very well while seated.
  2. Football foot drill. At practice, football players practice rapidly tapping their feet in place, simulating a run. Do the same thing while seated, for 30 seconds at a go.
  3. Take the stairs. If you need a harder workout, try taking them two at a time — you’ll get a chance to stretch your legs more than you would otherwise.
  4. Calf raises. Stand in front of a desk or other piece of furniture you can hold on to for balance. Raise your heels of the floor and slowly lower them.

The Inflatable Bookmark

Posted March 18th @ 5:17 pm by The Internet Journalist

This is one of the more inspiring and ingenious inventions that manage to stand out of the crowd.

The prototype bookmark, currently named ABRACADABRA, is the result of some clever thinking and applied logic by  Jung-Hyun Lee, Won-Sik Chae and Rhea Jeong.

The bookmark allows you to easily continue where you left off in your book. All you need to do is squeeze the visible pad of the bookmark, forcing  air into the part of the bookmark inside the book, and abracadabra (excuse the pun), you are easily able to slide in your finger, aim your face at the book and continue reading.

A picture is worth a thousand words, as is demonstrated by this picture explaining how this smart little invention works:

Sure, it may have a corny name, but this bookmark has got a lot of guts and a unique idea that could translate it from a garage project to a major financial success. And it’s still a prototype, so the name can still be changed.

I hope so.

How to Speed Through Airport Security

Posted March 12th @ 7:04 pm by The Internet Journalist

Airport Security

We all hate airport security. It’s an unneeded cause of stress, fatigue and high blood pressure, not to mention the many innocent people who are interogatted for a careless bit of fluid. Unfortunately, when something bad happens, everything directly or indirectly related gets beefed up. In this case it was security after 9/11.

So we all get stuck up and spend most of our time in security, though not anymore. Thanks to the Wired “How-to” Wiki, this frustrating procedure will hopefully save you a couple minutes, and a few thousand heartbeats.
